Installing artificial turf was one of the smartest moves you ever made.

After years of enjoying the grass, you wonder if the time has come to invest in new turf. Here are some of the more common signs indicating that the time has come to call a professional, remove the old grass, and replace it with something new.

Your Artificial Grass Has Been in Place for Over a Decade

If the artificial grass has been in place for over a decade, it is time to check the condition closely.

Depending on the materials used to construct the grass, it may be beginning to show some signs of wear. Other turf products are so durable that they can last for up to two decades before they need replacing. Start checking annually once the ten-year mark has passed, and you’ll be able to tell that it’s time to arrange for a new lawn.

Opting for an Updated Look

Another reason to consider removing the old grass and replacing it with a new product is the desire for a new look.

Just like real grass, artificial turf comes in many options in terms of style and shades of green. Perhaps the older grass was to your taste when it was installed 15 years ago. Today, you would like something in a deeper green and a slightly different style. A contractor can help you choose the replacement and ensure that it’s installed properly.

Damage to the Old Turf

Under normal conditions, you will get years of use from the grass.

If something out of the ordinary occurs and several spots are damaged significantly, it may be cheaper to replace the entire lawn than attempt to make repairs. For example, if a fire in the area spread to your lawn and reduced a few areas to clumps of melted gunk, there is no way to restore those areas. Your choices are to cut out the damaged sections replace them with a similar product, or to have the entire lawn replaced. Given the difficulties in matching the shade and hiding the seams, you may find that a new lawn is more cost-effective.

Getting the Property Ready for Sale

With the kids grown, you and your spouse have decided there’s no point in hanging on to the larger house. The plan is to sell the property and invest in a smaller home. Before you put the house on the market, it makes sense to ensure the place looks its best.

Along with sprucing up the inside, you’ll want to pay attention to the landscaping. Take a good look at the condition of the artificial turf. Will the grass still look great for at least another five years? If you have your doubts, it makes sense to replace it now. Doing so will create a more positive impression with prospective buyers and increase the odds of selling the property sooner rather than later.

Remember that it’s your lawn. You get to decide when the time is right to make any changes. If you haven’t really looked at the artificial grass lately, today is an excellent time to examine it closely. Should you find that it still looks and feels great, there’s no need to make a change. When you notice that it’s beginning to look a little worn, call a professional and learn more about the replacement options. Armed with that information, you’ll be able to make the decision that’s right for you.
